Why couldn’t they just say they’re doing a funding round to finance international expansion so they can support entrepreneurs all over the world or some similar corporate bullshit we hear nonstop?

Because, as described in the link, the gap between deposits and liabilities is likely to be over 25B.

Because most of the potential investors are sophisticated enough to realize they wouldn't be 'investing' as plugging holes in what would be rapidly turning into a Ponzi scheme.
