I'm fine with trying new things. In particular, I'm curious as to whether people have tried to build a desktop environment around webkit or similar--basically using the web stack instead of traditional GUI toolkits? Is there some obvious reason this is a bad idea (yeah, I know working in JS is unpleasant, but we have alternatives these days and frankly all of the native GUI toolkits for Linux are pretty unpleasant as well).

That's a great question about using web tech to build a DE. I've been wondering the same for sometime. Someone should shed some light on this.

Gnome Shell (and likewise, the Pop!_OS desktop) is _already_ relying on JS* to do a bunch of the heavy lifting for what you see+experience when using them, and that's been the case for the last ~10 years.

The fact that many (most?) people don't even know this is evidence that the problem is not JS, but rather the NPM subculture that draws attention to itself on social networking sites like GitHub, programmer Twitter, etc. That's just JS-the-language, though.

As far as "web tech" goes: Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape have depended on JS+DOM underpinning the main application for longer than some of the 20-something programmers who are doing web tech stuff have even been alive (let alone trying to be the next top package dev-influencer...)

People seem to have also forgotten the obsession with desktop "widget engines" (Konfabulator, Mac OS Dashboard, &c) that consumed lots of attention and energy during the latter part of whatever you call the decade from 2001–2010, which were precursors both to the aforementioned things and the sorts of single-purpose Electron apps that people sling around today.

These ideas are neither particularly, new, novel, or untested. (They're much closer to "entrenched", if we're going to call it anything.)

* or, in the case of Pop!_OS, TypeScript (that eventually gets compiled to JS and run on the Gnome fork of SpiderMonkey) <https://github.com/pop-os/shell>

So Gnome?

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Gnome just embeds a JavaScript runtime (and probably not a particularly good one) as an embedded scripting language. It's not using a web engine (which would handle styling, layout, accessibility, etc in addition to running JS).

I think Deepin's DE used to be based on HTML years back, but they switched to Qt.
