I have met those who can walk a very narrow line, being gracious and courteous without compromising their strict religious sense of honesty. But it takes a rather uniquely strong person to have it all — courtesy and honesty at the same time. Most people know they cannot have both at the same time so they develop a shared understanding of honesty which permits gracious lies.
