Yet another personal data pod.
This hyper-libertarian view is neither desirable nor realistic.
It’s unrealistic because it assumes they have the power to replace all web services with services that subscribe to these values.
It’s undesirable because a society where everyone has perfect and exclusive control over their own data necessarily means they never share any information about themselves with others. (As soon as you share a copy you’ve lost control.) Virtually nothing in society can function if this is strictly enforced. No community. No collective action. Lots of human suffering. Blocked ability to work together to reduce it.
What we need is a more powerful set of incentives for how information is used. The solution to corrupt banks isn’t burying gold in your backyard. Likewise, the solution to corrupt data holders isn’t a personal data pod in your garage.
This is a very hard problem and I’m glad they’re working on it. They’ve chosen many great technologies for a possible future solution. But it needs more political science and economics to make all the great computer science work in practice.
