I'm not the OP, but I've never had a boss who understood the details of my work. I've always been a lone physicist in a department full of mostly engineers, and if anybody understands what I do, it's because I explained it to them. My boss provides valuable feedback on the overall direction of my work, and the priorities of the business, which are really only known by talking to people. He advocates his team to the people above him. He understands the "politics" of the situation, which I put in quotes because it's often not a matter of people being sinister, but just the complexity of an organization with a lot of moving parts.
Also, being a good boss for the entire team positively impacts my job in ways that are hard to describe.
The dull bosses I had in past jobs were the ones who thought they could understand my job. As a result they tended to have a limited perspective, or distrusted their people.
