Digital voting schemes cannot be audited or verified. If the cast paper ballots are not the source of truth, the whole system is a charade.

And yet many (most?) jurisdictions do use ballot image scanners for their central count.

There have been various proposals to publish all the records after an election has been been certified. Which is always shot down on the basis of voter privacy (protecting the secret ballot).
