Outdated anecdata: When I was at Google several years ago, we were using JSON to pass protobuf data from server to client (in search). From what I heard it was faster to use the native JSON decoder in some browsers at that time. I assume this was for old versions of IE or something, and it may have changed since then. Not sure.
