Re:Private Prisons Are Behind the Push for Homeless Criminal... by alephr on Tuesday October 11, 2022 @05:28AM (#33161172)
The article points out how homeless people aren't popular or often defended. This reality is probably the biggest force against homeless people. Most people don't even want to consider their existence at all, especially if you see them daily. I don't see how trying to divert attention from this harsh reality that exposes weakness in our ability to collectively solve problems actually helps anything. If private prisons we're outlawed would all of even most of homeless issues eventually just go away? Is that something people really believe?

Have you been to SF? Or any major American city? I know a lot of us live in nice apartments in our tech bubbles, but at least half or more do not want help.

I used to volunteer in a soup kitchen years ago and back then they had a poster that showed the average homeless person was in that situation for about 2 weeks. This person went to shelters, took the aid that’s available, and got back on their feet.

The other half are a mix of perpetual criminals, drug addicts, and people who have chosen not to receive aid. They don’t want to get clean. Sorry, won’t be accepting the free shelter. They don’t want to work, and they want to be able to deplete the city resources while the rest of actually bring in tax revenue and make positive contributions to the coffers. Contributions that help those who want help get out of homelessness in two weeks.

So yes I personally would have a way better quality of life if I didn’t have to experience people peeing in the street, drugged out of their minds, and inviting a bunch of sketchy drug dealers into the areas. I know that sounds harsh but come on man. I know I contribute positively to the world and want to be a good civic player. But if people want to live in a society without contributing to it or following its rules, go down to the river or something. Tired of the trash everywhere, crime reports non stop, and not feeling safe in downtown!
