Until demand was proven, nobody was interested in making GPU compute at scales beyond niche (e.g. for scienctific calculation or for server clusters). As-is, we are about to enter a squeeze that is going to see a few of the big players in retail GPU manufacture drop out, so don't expect this glut of cheap GPUs to last.
