Since it was classified as vehicular manslaughter, Piersimoni said the punishment for the driver was less severe than if he had he been charged with murder. She said the driver, who was sentenced in April of this year, is already out of jail.

That's the problem right there - 6 months for homicide because juries won't lock up anyone for dangerous driving, they know they drive just as badly and it could have easily been them.

Manslaughter is _always_ less severe than murder because it wasn't intentional. It's not worth cutting an additional life out of society (and making them an additional cost to society) just for vengeance's sake if there's no risk of a repeat crime and there's remorse.

Agreed there’s no point bloating the prison population, but remorse is a poor parameter for sentencing IMHO. We should have fixed penalties for this kind of crime.

If someone killed my kid with their car I’d prefer the perpetrator to simply be never allowed to drive a car ever again. If they try, then they get time.

I do have to say I like the approach of them opening up a drag strip for people to try racing like things safely on. I think more cities should do things like this and essentially have public race courses. The courses that currently exist are very expensive and can be hard to get access to.

Many cities actually already have these for use by their police so all that they would have to do is open them up to the public.

What a relief! I thought this was going to be one of the trendy "urban neighborhoods are now radioactive free fire zones full of zombies and death" articles. Instead, it's about a real, yet very tiny, problem.
