I've been using a 3x3 virtual desktop setup for 20 years on my Linux system. Upper left for email, lower left for a real time view on system logs (useful for debugging), lower right for long running programs in on the CLI, the middle row for work; the rest on an ad-hoc basis. By now it's muscle memory to switch screens (it doesn't hurt that it's easy to switch spaces via the keyboard). It's what you get used to.
