Also helpful is comparing vimrc files. Here are some things I put in mine:

    color slate
    set tabstop=4
    set shiftwidth=4
    set expandtab
    set autoindent
    set mouse=a
    set laststatus=2
    autocmd FileType make set noexpandtab
    set tags=tags;/
