3D free software game developed in modern times and not a fork of Quake 1 or 3 is what makes this a big deal to me. Rust is a neutral point to me, but it does probably make it harder to run on other architectures.

The biggest negative to me about this project has always been the way they push Discord on you. I'll likely never be a part of the community even if I do play it because of that.

There's a bridge to Matrix, so you don't need to use Discord. Although personally I regard Discord as a nicer experience.

They mention GitLab, Discord, Matrix, Reddit, and their Wiki on their “join us”. Seeing Matrix should be a good sign.
