Given that this is Amazon's fork of ES, and given the terrible experience I've had in the past trying to run Amazon stuff locally, I do wonder if this is somewhat intentional. Although a more reasonable explanation is probably just that easy config is low on amazon's priority list since they want you using their managed version.
