Re:Ask HN: How are you onboarding new team members? by zizee on Saturday September 11, 2021 @06:08PM (#28496516)
Great point that onboarding is not just about getting to know the project, tools, and environment. There is the extremely important personal connection side of things.

Interesting that you have a prepared project, rather than have them work on contributing to a something "real". Is this a function of your company doing client work? I'm at a product company, so can see more benefit with having a contribution to the product, but I would like to understand this aspect more.

Yes, we are doing client work only. No internal projects (unless absolutely necessary). However, it can be quite a challenge to have an isolated assignment in a two-week client project sprint - especially if someone isn't very familiar with the technology. It can be any of [old stack] .NET Framework MVC, Web Api, Web Forms, Knockout.js and Less to [new stack] Clean Architecture .NET 5 with Blazor and SCSS.
