I dunno, I'm pretty sure I was hired without technical interview on the power of my GitHub profile. This is for a small startup (post-series-A, pre-series-B), programming in a slightly-less-popular-but-gaining-in-popularity language. Pre job-search I pinned all of my repos (the most popular ones to the top) in that language.

I was sure to carve out exceptions for all of my side projects in my employment contract, they did not argue about it.

The interview for my current job was basically reviewing my GitHub projects and discussing design decisions. I really enjoyed that process but I can also see how that isn't really viable in most cases (A lot of people don't have side projects, nor should they have to IMO).
