I'm not sure why you need to understand the facts to have an opinion. If kicking puppies was legal, you can still dislike people that kick puppies.

What if you’re kicking a puppy that’s biting your leg?

Understanding of facts is very relevant to form proper opinions. Without it you’re very easily manipulated via emotions.
