I see a lot of dashboards now where I work, in fact I sponsor the development of them as well.

For me they have to have an actionable element to them E.g. these clients are at risk of churning and here's why.

Without it it's just some data with fancy charts which was cool a year or so ago but doesn't cut it now.

Yeah we have a dashboard product as part of our offering and the main problem is that it’s just a mess of data thrown at the user to dig through. Our big initiative is to turn it into actionable information or guided experiences so that users can accomplish some specific goal.

Out of interest, if you know the goal (user has specified) and you have actionable information to get to that goal can you just automate the steps to achieve it?

I know this depends a lot on the business your in.
