The color NeXTStation actually had 4096 colors, dithered by Display Postscript to approximate more colors. 12 bit color and a 4 bit alpha channel.

And the dithering was wicked fast. I remember playing back multiple videos on NextSTEP fully dithered and quite good looking where the same machine (dual boot setup Intel P90) had huge issues even playing back one video.

Whoops! Yes, you’re right. I had misremembered its colour depth, but I recall it was bigger than the 256 colors of the VGA displays of the time.
