The solution is decentralized, verifiable forms of authority. Not unelected, unaccountable corporations that selectively (and with repeated obvious bias) choose what is “true.” Especially not YouTube, of all places, who has about as much authority as McDonalds, as far as I’m concerned.

That’s it. No attempt to have a single source of authoritative information is going to work post-Internet. The cat is already out of the bag. This model of the world is outdated and needs to be put out to pasture.

Is this solution possible with misinformation campaigns being waged against it from its inception?

I'm not disagreeing with you on an ideological level, but this solution is pie in the sky.

How do you propose this solution be enacted while the supporters it would need to come to fruition are actively being lobbied by the problem its supposed to solve?

I think it will occur naturally over the next few decades. Each misstep that Big Tech / Big Media makes chips off a tiny sliver of their edifice. Over time this will splinter into a thousand pieces, and some attempt to unify information across them will be invented and adopted.

It’s easy to forget that the modern Internet itself is only about thirty years old. We’re still at the very, very early stages.

Re:YouTube bans coronavirus vaccine misinformation by owlbynight on Thursday October 15, 2020 @05:45AM (#24786711)
I was on the early Internet. I miss it greatly, but also, it was the wild west, which was awesome when I was essentially living in the woods secluded from the outside world. The freedom was intoxicating. It ended up shaping my entire life.

I've watched the Internet grow and evolve into what it is and spent the majority of my free time participating in it from 1993 until today and probably until I die.

The thing is, the problem has always existed but its now being scaled up. There were kids pretending to be adults and puffing up their chests at the expense of decency. There was child porn. There were racists. There were pockets of criminals. There weren't many flat out idiots because using the Internet required at least a mononom of intellect to participate.

Yes, it's still early for the Internet, but America is just getting dumber while the Internet is getting easier and easier to use. How does it get better before it gets much worse?

You might have grown older and more frightful. I think kids today are fine navigating misinformation that another even older generation thinks will destroy societies.

I think it’s just a natural part of the technology adoption process.

Only early adopters use it > widespread usage > simplified, centralized solutions eat the usage market (FB, etc.) > the normal people learn how to be technical users, at least enough to go independent > decentralization takes hold. We’re now in between the last two steps.

Compare it to something like reading and writing or paper. Roughly the same process happened.

This is the million dollar question. For me I came to see how dogmatic ideas like the Intellectual Monopoly system are. How economic theories fall apart in the face of the gift of digital technology and it's zero marginal cost of reproduction.

I am deeply inspired by the writing and work of Arthur Brock and Eric Harris-Braun.

This has to be one of the most frightening proposals I’ve seen.

How would this body be formed? What body currently exists that is completely unbiased?

There have been numerous examples of Western gov’ts outright lying to the more citizens, often for decades. That would be the official truth, with any dissenting opinions deemed “illegal”.

This literally sounds like 1984 and the Ministry of Truth.

Edit: replied to subcomment, not parent comment, very regrettable.

I think you meant to reply to a different comment.

This. YouTube should be free to allow or block any content they want on their privately owned and permissions platform.

At the same time, no company should have the power to decide what content can be shared and spread.

It’s all of our responsibilities to take back the power we always had and give it back to individuals. The other their is through open protocols through decentralized / federated permissionless infrastructure.

Re:YouTube bans coronavirus vaccine misinformation by owlbynight on Thursday October 15, 2020 @05:20AM (#24786552)
But how do you take the power back? How do you yell shark and get people to listen when they've been desensitized by an ocean full of fake sharks?

Start with yourself. Prefer better alternatives whenever possible.

If you have the means: Start hosting. Contribute (code, tutorials, docs). Spread the word. Contribute funds to projects. Answer support questions/GH issues/forum posts from people who are having issues.

When it comes to people you know and interact with, start with the “low-hanging fruit” (individuals who have skills/interest in technology or are already agreeing about the problem).

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

I used to be outwardly and loudly critical of the system and people supporting it, but that got me nowhere, just isolated. When I stopped all criticism and just started aligning my life how I would like others to live, I finally started to get somewhere.

Why is this a solution.

No one doubts Alan Jones identity for example.
