What features are missing? I’ve never come across a web app that wouldn’t work right.

Web Push on Safari on iOS (works fine on desktop) https://onesignal.com/blog/the-state-of-ios-web-push-in-2020...

Safari on iOS deletes LocalStorage after 7 days of inactivity (https://webkit.org/blog/10218/full-third-party-cookie-blocki...)

The 7 day limit does not apply in any meaningful way to PWAs. From your link:

> As mentioned, the seven-day cap on script-writable storage is gated on “after seven days of Safari use without user interaction on the site.” That is the case in Safari. Web applications added to the home screen are not part of Safari and thus have their own counter of days of use. Their days of use will match actual use of the web application which resets the timer. We do not expect the first-party in such a web application to have its website data deleted.

> If your web application does experience website data deletion, please let us know since we would consider it a serious bug. It is not the intention of Intelligent Tracking Prevention to delete website data for first parties in web applications.

Push notifications are a major one. You can't have PWA Twitter/Slack/WhatsApp for example on iOS because it won't be able to receive messages when it's not the active app.

I consider the lack of notifications a feature and use the Twitter PWA.

Is the "Twitter PWA" something other than "www daht twitter dot calm" in a web browser?

The same. But you can add to home screen, so it feels like an app, kind of. It's pretty bad, but honestly I want social media apps to be bad to mitigate the addictiveness they build in.

notifications are an opt in feature, just like they are for native apps. If you don't want them you turn them off or don't opt in in the first place. Me, I want them on for private messages only. If twitter didn't allow that i'd turn them off. But apps like slack or at least apps like whatsapp etc would be kind of useless without push notifications.

Background audio is entirely disabled in iOS Safari PWAs.

The same sites can handle doing background media when used as a regular website in Safari, so this feels like one instance of PWA support at least seeming intentionally crippled.

That’s a feature, not a bug. I really don’t need background tabs shitting audio out of my phone speakers and running down my battery.

Why should a web app that you've manually installed (added to your home screen) be more restricted than when it's accessed via Safari?

The feature/bug argument doesn't really apply here - your preference is not the same as everyone else's, and your worst case scenario shouldn't prevent valid uses of the same technology. Especially when it's already something the user has chosen to install.

How does this work for apps like Soundcloud and Spotify?

Notifications is the most glaring one. I'm not sure whether background services are available or not.
