What are the reasons for the US to not already have a VAT? That’s one of those things that seems to be agreed upon by almost every country in the world but not the US.

Is there a reason why the US economy still grows while most of the rest of the world, and EU in particular, stagnates? Maybe not stymied demand plays some role in it.
