I think you need to distinguish here between "core business" where you generate your competitive advantage, and everything else. In your core business, were you are going to make the critical difference that determines why your business or organisation exists, shooting for the most finely tuned, unique solution that maximizes that advantage - or at least, enables capability to do that - is critical.

For everything else - I agree. The more bespoke you decide to be the more pain you create for very little value.
