It would be harmful for any site, whose content 'root' is not (sub)domain. Thus most user-submitted content - projects on github, youtube channels, ...

"URLs as breadcrumbs" solve this cleanly. They've already been visible for years in web search results.

Here the address bar would show "(padlock) [Github Inc] Github.com > Name Of Account > Name Of Project" for example. This is much clearer for end users.

Developers can always toggle an option to always show the URL or something.
