A pretty common story these days:
1. I built an X to solve Unicorn U’s problem.
2. Open source it, give talks on it
3. Leave Unicorn U and start a company based on X
4. ...
5. Profit(???)
Also, debatable whether or not Unicorn U actually needed a freshly built X instead of using existing tools/tech.
