You can help counter this effect by making thoughtful toplevel comments. They do get upvoted and seen.

It's not like Reddit. Your comment starts at the top, and falls after some time. Thoughtful content rises.

(Incidentally, messing with this formula is one reason why I was so vocal in the past.)
