I think the onus for curating a child's video content rightfully belongs on the one raising the child. How can YouTube (or any content creator) come up with a policy appropriate for everyone? Parents and guardians have different ideas of what their children should and should not watch.

Of course as the parent I am the final arbiter. But I'd like them to take the first swipe. Every other streaming platform for kids does this. Why can't YouTube?

I will channel urs hoezel giving an answer he once gave me to a similar question:

"it's too hard"

which translated of course means, "the cost benefit analysis doesn't come down in favor of spending the effort".

The complaint is they don’t curate kids content. Saying there are very basic tools allowing you to do so is hardly solving the problem. It’s vastly simpler to simply block YouTube for young children which also completely solves the parents problem.

Should I also personally send all sample foodstuffs to a commercial lab before feeding it to my child?

Caveat emptor, informed consumer, personal responsibility, blah blah blah.

What the Freedom Markets™ advocates don't acknowledge is transaction costs. If consumers have to vet every single activity, the economy suffers.

If YouTube Kids is marketing themselves as kid friendly, it'd be nice if it was true. My skepticism budget is finite.
