Same reason it's reasonable to use a voice chat system that's tied to your cell phone. Perhaps you've heard of it, it's called "making a phone call".
Also, same reason it's reasonable to use a text messaging system based on your physical address - "sending a letter".
So, the reason is: People have been doing that for hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of years.
