Domestic travel in the UK is a fairly different kettle of fish indeed. I would definitely handle any missed connection issues on domestic UK travel with the ticket office rather than looking for a conductor on board - UK domestic trains generally don't have one, and ticket inspectors, like parking wardens, have only one job and it's not to help you.
