CSS needs an equivalent to an SQL query planner, so that mere humans can understand how it works.
The Firefox DevTools (currently in Nightly, soon in stable) have started at least telling you why a certain selector does not apply, which sounds incredibly helpful: https://twitter.com/FirefoxDevTools/status/11747010367930327...
