The hubris of the software profession never ceases to amaze me. You have thousand-word screeds about the injustice of being required to attend a daily 15 minute meeting to catch up with your teammates, while being paid six figure salaries. I suggest getting a job in food service, or even construction if you want to see how the average laborer works. Tech is the softest industry ever created.

oh this one. "X isn't as bad as Y (where Y is worse) therefore X is OK, deal with it"

X and Y are completely unconnected and X is still bad and should be fixed.

Imagine if you went to the doctor with a fractured ankle and they said "well, it's not as bad as this baby I saw last week who was dying of sepsis. I suggest you count your blessings and deal with it"

And 6-figure salaries ? choose the value from the tail of the distribution to support your argument why don't you

Or, you could view this as being a developer addressing an inefficiency in a process. I, for one, view that as a positive trait for someone in this profession.

I’m not nuts about standups, Slack or the multitude of distractions dressed up as productivity tools, but I understand their value as a means for helping distributed teams feel some sense of camaraderie, even if that’s not the original intent.

“while being paid six figure salaries.“

And that’s still not enough! Think of the value we return to an organization, and we’re only paid six figures.

Ya know, you’re allowed to fight for the absolute best working conditions as a worker.

You’re perspective reeks of some sort of corporate shill. Like I should just be happy to even have a job however shitty the working conditions. That perspective keeps developers underpaid and stressed out.

As a well paid developer I'm very thankful to be in tech (I kinda just fell into it). IMO, being a developer doesn't require the intensive training of a doctor or lawyer yet pays really well (especially when you have 10-20 years experience). Personally I learned all I know on the job or on my own at home (my undergrad degree was Math and I did very little coding). Plus there are so many job options. Almost every company of a certain size needs software developers (or some type of IT staff). I've worked at companies where I had to work really hard with long hours, but I've also worked places with a very light workload (lots of screwing around time on HNs and Reddit). My son is adept at math and computers. I hope he goes the Computer Science route. He should be able to find a good job and live where he wants.

I have to wonder, did you really read the post? Your characterization of it as a "screed about the injustice" of standups seems wholly contradictory to the tone of the post. It literally opens with "your standups are killing your velocity." Correct or incorrect, it's an appeal to efficiency. I would hope that streamlining processes would be welcome in all industries including food service and construction.

I guess I fundamentally don't understand the nature of your argument; your reasoning essentially prohibits anyone daring to voice concerns about prevailing practices, because it could always be worse?

I am pretty sure that this is the tech people who created this industry and all the jobs evolving around. Softwares are generating a lot of revenue but are incredibly used too.
