I agree. Branding and logo design is all about visual communication. It's subtle, and often times hinges on idiomatic context -- for better or worse. Take AirBnB, for example -- it was critically panned for looking like a butt. Applying machine learning to this goal doesn't mean the design process itself can really be abridged because you still have to figure out what it is you actually want to say.
