I agree, it is a tool box thing. I either did not know of or forgot the term "dynamic programming," but I use memoization regularly, and have used it as short cuts on recursive calls. Accidental dynamic programming. Heck, the first time I heard of the collatz conjecture, my toy playing around with it memoized the results.
