Many (public) schools seem to forget that they are bound by the first amendment like any other government entity. If the child was harassing or bullying another student (or inciting such acts) I could see an argument being made, but beyond that free speech is free speech.

The jurisdiction of schools does not end at the school. If you do something outside of school that the school does not like the school will punish you. My school specifically tells us this, and says the if we post something to social media then they probably will find out about it. I don't know the legality of it, but its very common practice.
