But a smoking crater the shape of Taiwan is not that useful to China. A big part of why they want Taiwan is for the businesses, which you don't really get if you nuke the island from orbit.

But at what cost? If they want Taiwan for the institutional knowledge of TSMC, will that remain after an invasion?
