The difference is that the wars nowadays are less about ideals and more about profit. Yes muslim extremism is bad and those people are bastards, but the military isn't fighting them as effectively and there is no way to win this war - like the "war" on drugs it's a self-reinforcing, endless cycle kinda thing.

WW2 was different; the nazis had invaded most of Europe, were committing genocide, etc.
