The Mars Colony that people have assured me will be in operation within the next 50 years, is still 150 years away at least.

We could start building a Mars colony pretty much right now if we wanted to, but nobody is willing to pay for it. Check for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Direct for a feasible proposal.
