What made Xerox PARC special? Who else today is like them?

Great post, +1.

So in that case imagine there is a PARC bis somewhere out there... what kind of out-of-regular-folks wallet things they might be working on right now?

I want to be surprised today like Jobs was when he visited them first time.

I think DeepMind is another PARC. They never cease to amaze me with their brilliant papers. Something just as great as the personal computer and GUI will be built there.

Any standouts you are able to link? I'd love to dive in, but I am not sure where to start.

Wavenet impressed me much: https://deepmind.com/blog/wavenet-generative-model-raw-audio...

Also Decoupled Neural Interfaces: https://deepmind.com/blog/decoupled-neural-networks-using-sy...

And AlphaGo of course.
