After flying United to Australia and having a miserable time of it, I used to joke that soon United will introduce a fee structure in which for an economy ticket, they will pack you in a cubic crate 80 cm on a side, and for an additional $180 they'll upgrade you to a full cubic meter.

Now it seems much less an absurd joke.
