Sounds similar to a grinder from Philly.

Or a grinder in pretty much anywhere in New England.
The sandwich I wish would grow some legs is the ham hoagie. Apparently this is a sandwich that only exists in north-western Maine (I've never been able to find it anywhere else), but it is simple, cheap and delicious. Take a sub roll, and load it up with provolone cheese, sliced ham, and bacon, optionally some mustard and mayo, and toast it until the cheese melts.
