"A seething mass of undifferentiated matter" describes runaway exothermic reactions fairly well.

It also helps that Games of Life can be saved and reloaded. If your lab bench explodes, too bad, start over from scratch (assuming you're uninjured).

Oh, of course, simulations without perfect replays would be an abomination! Not even worth mentioning! -- What are we, heathens who can't even manage the basics of reproducible builds?
