What we need most is something easy to set up and use. The whole point of a social network is that other people are on it. Too many of these P2P networks need you to know how to use a command line, install a bunch of auxiliary packages, manually generate keys, or hunt down an active server in a federated network.

While still a work in progress, the guys at Datt (Decentralize All The Things) are working on a decentralized Reddit alternative that will "run in a web browser and can be used as easily as any web app". What I find interesting about that project is that there are plans to integrate payments.
All successful decentralized applications are based on an implicit economic model (like trading data for data in BitTorrent). Without payment integration these systems are using a barter instead of a market system. When decentralized apps start to integrate payment systems they will move from barter to market economies, which will unleash a new wave of innovation imo.

"Although it is common for companies to build products that lock-in users at a protocol level, we believe it is better that people use our products and services because they get value from them, rather than because we have built a barrier to exit. If users are not choosing to use our products or services, this is a valuable sign that we are not building the right thing."
Wow.

Then the vast majority of people won't get to have it.

Then the vast majority of people don't deserve that freedom.
The sad thing is, in today's world, that it means that the minority that really needs that freedom can't have it either.
