Here's the key quote from that article: "Sun Microsystems acquired VPL and Lanier's patents in 1999."

He had key, basic patents in 1999, and he had to sell them.

I personally have never been able to take Lanier seriously.

I'd like to know how much he got for those patents before I pass moral judgement. As Calvin and Hobbes put it, the disturbing thing is not that every man has his price, but that the price is often so low.
