I merged menubar and toolbar a few years ago: http://akkartik.name/akkartik.firefox.png (via http://akkartik.name/firefox.html)

I remember I spent a long time changing the tooltip on the throbber. Every new version I'd open up one of the jar files to update the tooltip. By the time of this screenshot I had gotten rid of the throbber altogether.

You could just use F11? Is it possible to have F11 without the autohiding? Also on KDE, say, you could easily hide the title bar and borders too (which would approach the Chrome look).

My layout is like his before shot. I use the menubar entries often enough that I want them to be easily accessible - a single "Menu" entry that popped up the other menu items as an overlay menu would be great for me and would allow me to ditch the menubar. As for the status bar - I do like to be able to see the target for links by mousing over them, again this could be an overlay (I think Chrome does that too? perhaps Opera, can't recall).

I do try to limit my add-ons as they often cause problems but I'm now trying out https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4550 Compact Menu 2.

Tiny Menu, your link, disables the shortcut keys according to one review. Thanks though.

bit bare to be so high on hacker news, but I would also suggest setting the keywordURL in about:config to

http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourc...

then you can get rid of the search box entirely and search from the url bar, somewhat closer to chrome, there is no need to have seperate url bars and search.

(btw, anyone else able to hide the menubar in firefox 3.6pre on ubuntu?)

I find I actually do use both "g search terms" and the search box. When I'm sure I'll want to refine a search I use the search box, or if I know I'll want to search multiple SE. My most used keyword is probably w (wikipedia), then g, then d (dictionary.com).

But then you can't use any of the other search plugins.
