They are similar, but what do you expect from this kind of site? A list of products, a short blurb for each, an introduction. I'd guess every bigger WP site has an article similar to these.
Yes, it is possible the WPMUdev author saw the other article and thought "Good idea, should write an article like that", but the timing could be coincidence as well. And even if they did, they didn't directly copy it. And if it was coincidence, I can understand they are pissed
