Re:Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:48AM (#50084932)
It seems melodramatic right until Russia blows up your bank's data center, and their digital payment system goes down for days or weeks just as you're out buying groceries.
Re:Nvidia's $750B in Deals Reignite Circular AI Fears on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @06:37AM (#49081907)
Some LLM companies paid with stocks instead of cash, or with a mix of cash and stocks. Sometimes Nvidia invested in companies and those companies used that money to buy Nvidia GPUs / NPUs.

Nvidia can lose a lot of money if those companies fail. But even in the absolute worst case, Nvidia can go back to making video game GPUs and they will be fine.

The problem is for everyone else who invested in AI. Especially American "401" retirement funds that always invest in the 100 biggest companies.

Re:I Regret Migrating to Codeberg on Friday July 24, 2026 @09:07AM (#49034997)
Did you... read my post? The first thing I posted in this thread was a direct quote from the Satzung. Did you think "education" was about learning the history of the Ottoman Empire..?
Re:I Regret Migrating to Codeberg on Friday July 24, 2026 @07:12AM (#49033897)
Can one argue with a straight face that people will learn to code better by using a predominantly AI-based workflow? Or even learn by reading vibecode uploaded by someone else?

Hell, I'd argue that Vibecode without the prompt that generated it isn't even real open source.

Re:I Regret Migrating to Codeberg on Friday July 24, 2026 @06:26AM (#49033504)
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the spicy autocomplete.
Re:I Regret Migrating to Codeberg on Friday July 24, 2026 @06:24AM (#49033485)
The resource limit are quite clear: From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.
Re:I Regret Migrating to Codeberg on Friday July 24, 2026 @05:58AM (#49033274)
A more relevant quote is "to enable equal opportunities regarding the access to knowledge and education." from their mission statement. As a gemeinnütziger Verein (charitable association) their charta is legally binding.
Re:Apple Defeats Liability for Not Scanning iCloud for CSAM on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @01:24PM (#49010235)
Predominantly suicide, actually. Which is committed with whatever is conveniently at hand, and reducing convenience reduces incidence.
Re:My USB Drive Has a Hidden Encrypted Vault on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @11:07AM (#49007994)
It would be less suspicious if the drive advertised 512GB and returned garbage data for any read past 8GB
Re:My USB Drive Has a Hidden Encrypted Vault on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @09:36AM (#49006592)
It has an SD card because proper flash is expensive. Surely the people making "4TB" flash drives on Temu must be using the same methods, or else they will be soon.
Re:Unicode 18.0.0 Beta on Wednesday May 27, 2026 @06:01AM (#48291990)
That list only includes suggestions that were seriously considered and voted on.

Since it's a vote, there is no single official 'reason' for rejection. If I had to guess: it would be confusing to anyone who didn't grow up with American TV shows.

Re:Google Broke reCAPTCHA for De-Googled Android Users on Sunday May 10, 2026 @09:02AM (#48083646)
To prevent this sort of abuse, the server would have to request the `pseudonym` field, which contains a hash across the server identity and the card's secret salt, allowing the server to detect abuse but not to track the user across multiple services.
Re:Google Broke reCAPTCHA for De-Googled Android Users on Saturday May 09, 2026 @03:47PM (#48077667)
OR:

The website sends a request for age verification.

The app[1] on the user's device[2] forwards that request to the chip on the user's ID card. The user authorizes themselves with their 6 digit PIN stored on the card.

The chip produces a signed reply containing the following payload fields: `issuing_country:string` and `over_18:bool`

Audiophile products are a known scam.

This is an enthusiast product, as evidenced by the premise that you care about color-coordinating the inside of your computer.

Re:Digitizing photos from the 1998 Game Boy Camera on Wednesday April 01, 2026 @05:33AM (#47598709)
Since when is that a thing? I'll presume they're boycotting the new age verification laws?
Re:The curious case of retro demo scene graphics on Monday March 30, 2026 @08:58AM (#47573705)
AI would be helpful for finding innovative solutions?

Are you talking about some sort of hypothetical future Super-AGI?

Not really relevant here, because it's not real 2G/3G, but 4G throttled to 2G speed.
Re:Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning? on Sunday March 22, 2026 @12:15PM (#47479030)
That sounds a lot like "do the thing you've been trying and failing for the past few weeks, but this time succeed instead of failing"
Re:The Pentagon is making a mistake by threatening Anthropic on Friday February 27, 2026 @12:39PM (#47183170)
I'll imagine Grok plays ball because this is an obviously blatantly fascist policy, and Elon did like 2 or 3 SIEG HEILs at the inauguration.
By selecting Domain Join, which is available on Professional edition and above.
Re:What Is (AI) Glaze? on Tuesday December 23, 2025 @08:34AM (#46365204)
Even if it doesn't work, it's important to try.

If OpenAI steals all your work, that's copyright infringement - but if you tried to stop them through technical means and they do it anyway, that's felony DRM circumvention.

Re:I Know We're in an AI Bubble Because Nobody Wants Me on Saturday November 29, 2025 @10:53AM (#46088460)
>assetocracy

That's an interesting neologism, but the existing term for "rule by whoever controls the most expensive assets" is "capitalism"

Re:As 'Dorian Gray' ages, its relevance only grows on Saturday November 22, 2025 @02:16PM (#46017429)
Uhm, actually, the PICTURE of Dorian Gray ages.
Re:A Day at Hetzner Online in the Falkenstein Data Center on Wednesday November 19, 2025 @06:31AM (#45978317)
Privately-owned companies can provide better value to their customers. They can invest in customer trust and brand value that pays off over decades, not quarters.

They can also choose enshittification, but they are not pressured into it like companies with institutional investors are.

As a Hetzner customer, I would lose out if they went public.

Re:Valve is about to win the console generation on Thursday November 13, 2025 @05:17PM (#45921387)
Duckov is not indie. It's a reasonably sized game backed by a large (Chinese) publisher.
Intel i5-9350, UHD Graphics 620, Windows 11 v25H2

Completely unplayable. It runs fine at first, and then suddenly drops to below 1FPS for no discernible reason. This happens regardless whether I am on the world map or combat scene. I am running the exe, couldn't find the browser version.

On an unrelated note, I am surprised to see a JS program working without the usual 200MB NW.js runtime (as seen with RPG-MV)

Re:Windows 10 Deadline Boosts Mac Sales on Saturday October 25, 2025 @12:27PM (#45705076)
You must connect to the internet and connect your Microsoft account. There used to be a workaround using console commands, but that was removed recently.

Without a cloud account, you are stuck on the OOBE setup screen.

Re:Greenland Ditches Starlink for French Satellite Service on Wednesday October 22, 2025 @08:17AM (#45667898)
Events include:

Early in the war, Starlink used their killswitch to prevent Ukraine from utilizing their service for military purposes.

The sitting US president has threatened war against Greenland. He has not backed down or apologized, merely moved on hoping we would forget.

You'd have to be crazy to pick Starlink under these circumstances.

NOTHING TO HIDE

NOTHING TO FEAR

Yeah, that would be so sad... Hey Alexa, play Despacito 2.
