But that brings up important point, is this complaint about execs in any way specific to games industry? It is very common across businesses that execs haven't actually done grassroots work in their companies field?
> I'm skeptical that this one minute jitter period is solely attributable to one minute timers in power inverter equipment. It's likely the net scale effect of all cron-like scheduling of actions in everything with a microprocessor

The article says as much:

> The identified synchronization mechanism is not specific to UPSs or battery systems, but reflects a general property of digitally controlled devices operating with external timing signals or periodic software routines

e has had "experimental" wayland support for over a decade (since 0.20 from 2015).
GNU utils are very maximalist though. Busybox touch is much simpler, especially if you cut out the optional ifdeffed susv3 features: https://github.com/mirror/busybox/blob/master/coreutils/touc...

plan9 touch is also pretty clean: https://9p.io/sources/plan9/sys/src/cmd/touch.c

Well, the 1 hour TAS speedrun is probably close to optimal and it also does lot of stuff that would be annoying to do in real human gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tImNejO5g48
There is plenty of fun to be had with write errors and fsync. One example was so called "fsyncgate" where postgresql stumbled upon fsync issues: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20491965

I think there were some changes in kernel since that but I can't remember what exactly

Rpi is not always such a gold standard either.. is their boot chain still a mess? That was one of the problems with zero 2w
there is radxa zero 3w, which on paper is nice looking board. bit dated maybe but still lot fresher than pi zero 2w. the rockchip soc should have decent mainline support and it has been around for a while
Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:24PM (#50198386)
I'd recommend everyone to familiarize how these forests were formed in the first place. They are not some natural thing, nor any ecologic sanctuaries. They are the result of immense postwar hubris and greed, draining ecologically precious and fragile wetlands to create poor (semi-)monoculture plantation forests whose only destiny ever was to get clearcut later.

Of course Google is (likely) still at fault here and should have managed this better, but it is important to understand the context also.

These new DC sites are literally middle of nowhere with major nearby renewable (hydro and wind) power plants.

You are perfectly free to run your own root servers
Re:Verisign .com Domain Name Registry Consumer Class Action on Monday October 19, 2026 @08:08AM (#50151398)
In general icann fees are fairly small fraction of the overall cost of a domain, most of the money ends to registrars and registrys.
Re:Verisign .com Domain Name Registry Consumer Class Action on Monday October 19, 2026 @06:02AM (#50150455)
Tbh the .bg situation seems rather internal problem in Bulgaria rather than problem in the system. As the article mentions, governments definitely can get control of their tld if they want to, so the problem here seems to be that Bulgaria isn't interested.
Re:Verisign .com Domain Name Registry Consumer Class Action on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:45AM (#50150344)
Then buy domain operated by european registry?
Re:Verisign .com Domain Name Registry Consumer Class Action on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:14AM (#50150176)
This whole case seems to hinge on the argument that .com domains somehow constitute their own market, instead of being just part of wider domain name market with plenty of competing registrys. That might prove difficult argument in court.
We have been working on interplanetary (or rather non-earth centric) time standards already for a while. See e.g. Barycentric Coordinate Time, Coordinated Lunar Time, Areocentric Coordinate Time, and related publications.
Re:Nvidia's first GPU: GeForce 256 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:15PM (#50095422)
xbox 360 would have been better example, xenos with its unified shaders was in some ways more advanced than its contemporary desktop gpus at launch.

Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, and Fujifilm cameras all shoot HEIF these days.

Re:ETH-68: Ethernet Audio Interface for Linux on Friday October 09, 2026 @03:24AM (#50017216)
Afaik all pro audio standards more or less require ptp for timing, and that might add requirements for nics and switches? otoh the i210 nic, that is mentioned in the post, does have full (g)ptp/phc/tsn/etc support
Re:Time Travel in Braid (2015) on Thursday October 08, 2026 @07:38PM (#50013974)
And drm free with native linux ports
Re:ETH-68: Ethernet Audio Interface for Linux on Thursday October 08, 2026 @07:22PM (#50013836)
> There is no need for another clock on the Linux host

surely that works only as long as eth68 is the only interface? but often you might want other interfaces too which inherently have their own clocks

Re:A Terminal Protocol for Program Status (OSC 7501) on Thursday October 08, 2026 @07:20PM (#50013809)
I'm starting to lean in the opposite direction and feel like we should have probably stopped at ecma-48. piling up extension after extension is just straying further from the light.
Re:Time Travel in Braid (2015) on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:19AM (#50006878)
That bundle also included Amnesia: The Dark Descent as additional star. Crazy times, it must have been one of the peak bundles in terms of quality
Your intuition is not completely wrong. We are currently in process of redefining the fundamental SI second because our new clocks are more precise than the definition. It is quite mind-bending stuff.

that is pretty much exactly what they did?

that already happened during previous round

Re:Show HN: gtlds.fyi – All the proposed new gTLDs on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @06:23PM (#49999572)
gTLDs didn't really ever have any meaningful purpose though, that is kinda the crux of the problem. Postel didn't bother enforcing any sort of policy of what goes where so the gTLDs became completely meaningless.
gTLDs include .com, .org, .info etc, so they have been around pretty much since the beginning of public dns
