Re:Scaling Git at OpenAI on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:27AM (#50348438)
Everytime you use sites it should record the code, for example. machine speed code needs machine speed vcs.
we all know it's lip service anyway
3.8 flash is pretty good. it's not expensive, works great for reasoning tasks and it's fast.

for coding .. it works ok but i prefer the openai or anthropic models, much better results.

what ! according to pages longs of ads if I don't donate all my money to Jimmy Wales Wikipedia dies!
Re:Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:58PM (#50262121)
what's funny of that the llm learns from Wikipedia and then is used to put data back in Wikipedia. can't imagine that going well lol
imo that besides the point. can models be made to issue unsafe code, advice, etc depending on the context of where they run and who runs it? yes.

is it hard to prove? yes.

then, which model does it, or if any does it now.. doesn't matter. what matters is that some inevitably will, and which models you pick will matter.

Re:Gen Z Is the First Generation Dumber Than Their Parents on Sunday October 18, 2026 @10:45AM (#50141558)
western "mass" schooling started in 789, over a thousand years ago, not "thousands".

actual decline started last century (that's for a hundred).

Older people aren't actually "boomers with everything handed to them", it's just you in 30y - more experience, more depth, and slight drop in cognitivity.

for computer science, I find it interesting that almost every Gen z can use and talk about concepts but does not understand how a computer works (be it transistors, kernel, or memory allocation for example).

With AI we all know this will get worse, and it already does. it's not just the prompting - AIs can and will return information with the upmost confidence, even if wrong. A lot of critical thinking is needed, which cannot be found by re-querying or using a search engine (that does the same thing) - information isn't cognitivity.

Re:Gen Z Is the First Generation Dumber Than Their Parents on Sunday October 18, 2026 @10:32AM (#50141439)
I find that the rare of smart vs dumb people in companies, even tech companies is also pretty scary nowadays. it wasnt perfect in the late 80-90 but execs usually could do the work of everyone, and also manage the workforce. nowadays most execs are placed and don't know of care how their products work, unless it's a startup.

the reason it's interesting is that the lack of understanding and skill results in a "bourgeoisie" class in the workforce, and that isn't correlated to skill, amounts of labor or even cognitivity.

This tends to reduce the utilization of 'overwhelmingly' smart people, who are put to crappy tasks just to make money and ends meet.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @01:06AM (#50128133)
yet there's hundred if videos on yt of people shooting their cybertruck and it is indeed bullet proof vs 9mm.

the hate trains folks get on boarded onto just blind them from simple truth. yeah I'm pretty sure the road does indeed fly for short distances. yes it's totally impractical. and yet it does. and it's also quite the feat. doesn't mean one should buy it, but the blindness coming from manufactured hate is really ridiculous.

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:40PM (#50082110)
I mean its also been generated by a bunch of PM that want to get promoted but have little idea of what they're talking about..however nobody has been fired YET for using too much vague AI words.
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:39PM (#50082104)
or, they've had 4 for a long time (which they did). AFAIK they have had 5 for a while now too.

I'm not quite sure what their strategy is, because it looks like the models released just have tweaks on the same original training data, but nothing more. Basically, they decide not to release them and it doesn't seem to be a much different when they finally to decide to release.

so you're saying I should use my smtp filters on my website? (to be fair that seems like a good idea)

Re:So You Think You Could Be an Electrician? on Saturday October 03, 2026 @11:47PM (#49950419)
rocket electrician, ... obviously they mean the one that comes and fix your house or breaker panel.

look my brother is an electrician. I do this work too, but for a different reason: in my area they make as much or more than mid level software engineers, so when it's about adding a breaker box they want 8k and if it's not absolutely perfectly easy they might still drop the job. enough of them do and eventually you do it yourself.

obviously, it's quite different for the ones that gotta go daily for a lot less pay, like my brother, and while it doesn't tax your mind as much as tech companies, you do have a tax on the body. plus, they always do quite a bit more than just the electrical wor

the only mistake was politics.

I take them regularly in SF, twice cheaper than lyft, 4x cheaper than waymo and works fine... it's literally the cheapest other than zoox (free if on tester list, which I am), but it's as fast as Lyft/Uber.
Re:There are no "rogue" AI agents on Sunday September 27, 2026 @03:45PM (#49870136)
the problem is that if it's not openai I then it's anthropic, if it's not anthropic then it's someone else. if it's not the US then it's China. if it's not China (lol as if) then it's someone else.

underdogs also use that fact to push as much dirt and dislike as possible on the top dog, but just so that they can do the same anyway... and openai will just stop spending for IPO as we all know. then all execs will make 1bi or so. top guys a few hundred bi.

it's disgusting but unavoidable.

Re:Plan Mode Is Dead on Saturday September 26, 2026 @12:46AM (#49853296)
that's the problem though: - LLM now output good enough results without a plan.. for coding at least. I'm not saying amazing results..just good enough. it works fine.

- Most people suck at planning anyway

- LLM still don't give you a way to verify and understand to iterate.. you have to ask and then formulate and way so people barely do it, they just trust the vibe

IMO the current successor to plan mode should be the harness knowing when to tell the use "ok here's our overall current state in a simple diagram", auromatically

Re:OpenAI agent hacked Australian government website, PM says on Thursday September 24, 2026 @10:32AM (#49831177)
they're not really contained and they usually run fully unattended, with a start prompt.

The first one that was used to market anthropic models was run by a company that called them sandboxed with no Internet access and of course it was disclosed later that they in fact did have internet access, and they won't disclose the prompts.

insert meme of kid putting a stick in their bike front wheel here... that's how many use LLMs today. it will get worse.

Re:OpenAI agent hacked Australian government website, PM says on Thursday September 24, 2026 @10:28AM (#49831133)
hn is surprisingly lacking in critical thinking lately. everything is going to be "rogue agent did x", when a human prompted it until their prod env went down, and it'll be called "a hack" or whatever.

The "agents" dont walk out of openai, anthropic and whatever headquarters and decide to go wreak havoc. They also don't read a prompt and decide "haha imma hack the NSA now", that's not how any of this works lol.

Re:US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @02:17PM (#49716564)
Exactly. Most of these things are just big world politics. Same for AI, btw. "OMG dont do this this is horrible" as the other country does it and hasn't talked about it or haven't been caught doing it.

It's all information wars at the end of the day, and HN is not impervious to any of it. Its like OAI and Anthropic saying we should all slow down AI model work. Like, lol, right. As if others would do that.

The only way to be safe, so far, has to be that everyone is second guessing everyone's capabilities - not "ahah they dont do it anyway lets go crush em".

Same as nuclear weapons basically, we all have them.

Re:AI is not a normal technology on Sunday September 13, 2026 @11:00PM (#49691401)
that's not how it works. you get better tech for the same or more work and you can work longer before you die.

if you are no longer needed, you won't be allowed to live.

makes me chuckle every time folks think humans who get to power are nice.

Re:Authorization Terminology Is a Mess: Let's Fix It on Friday September 04, 2026 @10:27AM (#49565175)
people still dont understand the difference. "you do iam but what about controllong access" comes in all the time.

words dont really matter all that much. people use them because it makes them sound like they know what it is, and if its important and complex, usually have no clue.

ive seen enough "abac" where the attribute is "your login name"

a lot is also not caught.. and over time itll be less and less. hn has been great for a very long time, but this time has come to an end
