yeah I think there is a way to do this elegantly. I didn't have my own device until I was 20 or so actually, and it wasn't a big problem.
As a young teenager I could use the family desktop for education and entertainment. I had online friends in my late teens I played games with, and would have done much more so if I had a more more powerful cpu lol. Should mention though, these friends were through in person networks on discord, so I wasn't really in the public square I guess.
So I could explore things but not get into anything naughty.
When I decided to get into software dev I got my own cpu and my own phone once I had a job in dev.
Might seem pretty conservative but it worked, and I'm technical enough now. I wish I would have got into coding earlier but I've done alright so  Depending on the environment for my kids I'd move the timeline back a little, but not too much. Having too much time and just the unfiltered internet to fill it is too dangerous for young teens.
These people need be given a button to call an inference url with just text. When you realize that's all a "model" is doing its easy to understand that its not sentient.
Actually a good article, but I'd like to point out the fact that this is like a 3x repost. Don't think you need to be on hacker news at this point.
Really? I thought that it was kind of a ecumenist religion that included themes from many religions.
what if everything is actually just owned by a collaborative initiative between big proton, electron and neutron ;)
I don't think many people realize what a historical aberation 20th century China was.
probably Russia or China (though they might be more than virtual)
More likely Iran tbh
Isn't gambling usually illegal for minors?
Have you ever considered the possibility of supernaturally guided evolution. Always seemed like an interesting possibility to me. So God creates an incredibly beautiful concept that life comes from. Seems like one of the most probable solutions to how astonishingly unlikely abiogenesis would be.
yeah the transiency thing is huge. I think a big part of that is young people moving away from their home city for university and then for a job. It really breaks up the social fabric at an important stage and replaces it with uni friends and work friends. I find there is a bit less of that here because people are a bit more likely to get into the trades/small business so schooling doesn't uproot them as much.
The difference walking makes is interesting to me because rural communities are obviously not that walkable, though I guess as a kid I could bike to my friends' place (2km).
I really don't get the appeal of suburbs, I think they might just be a reaction to failures in cities, and companies inability to set up shop where their workers/customers are. I've heard of people who drive in 1:30 - 2:00 to their workplace in a major urban center, why wouldn't the companies just move out to where they live, drop their wages by 10% and everyone would have more time/money. So yeah, true suburbs make no sense, the only reason people choose them is because cities get expensive and/or scummy.
I've noticed rural communities tend to have more extended family and larger families which helps a lot. Besides less different types of work.
so cool to see this on here, I'm from rural southern Ontario and I feel like I always have to explain it to anyone from the city or 'not from these parts'
In public, yeah people probably wouldn't care about french speakers, but in a shared environment I definitely would prefer they speak English. My brother use to have to tell his Dutch-Canadian in-laws to speak English when we were at his house. I'd feel the same way at work.
could have been high budget dystopian at least!
you might say the domain expert expects the coputer to also already be a domain expert
fwiw I'm an entrepreneur/business owner far from the software business, and I've be asked a few times for a business card so I'm going to get one just to have it handy.
that might be gone but in my experience - and I live on a farm in the developed world - while some tasks are handled by professionals on serious operations, its pretty common for farmers to do a bit of their own welding, a bit of their own plumbing, treat their own animals, etc, and only bring in professionals for big jobs. Its still very much a family affair even if a farm is only focused on one crop.
As a fellow Canadian I gotta agree on this one.
there are projects that you can use to index discord servers, unfortunately a lot of communities just don't use them.
I'm not sure if the concern is really blatant disinformation ( which as you point out is easier to smell test ) or if its really more of the thought that the Chinese have a cambridge analytica level style access to American social data.
Sure teenagers can parse bias in the media they are consuming, but is it that effective when the media company can tailor content based on the user's preferences + the preferred political manipulation?
Not saying you should ban it, just a thought.
