Re:Private Jet plane crashes in Florida on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @05:29AM (#50350218)
I might be going mad but 9 metres in 1/30s (half the plane in one frame) is 270m/s * 3600s = 972000m/h / 1000m/km = 972km/h or about 600mph?

I think your 1000 is the right ballpark but the units are wrong.

Checked my bot's post from earlier today (taken from NASA's data[0]) and it says "Velocity relative to the Earth is about 34 km/sec (~77,173 mph); to the Sun about 16 km/sec (~37,763 mph.)"

You could add "pretty shameless" before "copy" there. Sheesh.

What next? words.horse which is just Wordle?

"for users who are not accustomed to text editors with separate insertion and editing modes"[0] could be construed as "beginner-friendly" (albeit with some squinting, I'd concede.)

Re:Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:19AM (#50287288)
Sure, the coffee shop might be a problem (since I'm guessing that'd be more than 10 minutes.) You could always turn it off (and a smart system wouldn't turn it back on 10 minutes later unless you leave and come back.)
Re:Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:04AM (#50287172)
iOS focus does let you have location-based activations ("when I arrive at work", etc.)

> "Oh sorry, I happened to walk by an opera house."

It would be unfortunate for them to phone you precisely in the small period where DND was turned on as you walked past the opera house (even a large one would be, what, under two minutes of walking?) and not try you again.

(Because if you have instant location-based DND, yes, it might turn on as you walk by an opera house but equally it would turn off when you were past the opera house. Normally, though, I'd expect location-based DND to only kick in after a certain period of time in the same location - say 10 minutes.)

Re:Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:19AM (#50286821)
$79 per consumable tank, yes, which is rated for 75000 layers (according to [0]) which is "approximately 190 prints with an average height of 39 mm at a layer height of 100 µm" - not that long if you're printing regularly.

In contrast, I can get 6 FEP sheets for my Mars 2 Pro for $21 which don't appear to have any official lifetimes but generic internet advice says "40-50 prints" on the low side. That'd be 240 prints for $21 compared with 190 prints for $79.

Re:Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:57PM (#50281506)
* If you buy the "Form Studio 1 Resin Tank Pro" extra at $79 because the included tank "is not compatible with Tough 1500 Resin or materials needing to utilize Open Material Mode"

I assume you mean "connected-component labeling" with union-find as the underlying "manage the sets" algorithm? If not, a link would be helpful.
Re:A Stackless Floodfill Automaton on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:47AM (#50261073)
To find connected regions on a map. I could probably have been smarter about the initial generation and connected things as they were generated (but that has only just occurred to me. Worth a go, I suppose.)
Re:A Stackless Floodfill Automaton on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:06AM (#50260482)
Huh, that's useful because I had to write a floodfill a couple of days ago and it was a pain in the arse.

I'll be converting my code to the stackless version toot sweet.

Pretty sure we have, e.g. [0], "TI's MSPM0Cx MCUs featuring Arm® Cortex®-M0+ core with 24 MHz CPU, 32-bit structure, 4 to 16 KB Flash provide cost-effective designs for electric toothbrush and shaver applications." - compared to the 5150[1], it's 4x the bus width, 5x the CPU clock, albeit with fewer RAMs.

No, right wing parties have been winning globally because they are vastly more resourced both financially and media-space-ly than the opposition. If you can constantly flood the zone with bullshit, it becomes impossible for the opposition to correct the disinformation before the next flood arrives.

Re:Laptop Based on 6502 CPU on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:51AM (#50150388)
That's how it was on the Spectrum, at least - it had 64k of RAM but the bottom 16K was permanently mapped to the ROM[0].

Might have been interesting if they'd allowed you to page out the ROM to access the extra 16K - load a small routine from tape that contains your own tape loading routine, swap out the ROM, load the rest of your app, bob's your uncle. Would have needed some shenanigans to swap in the ROM on reset, obvs.

Fails to reproduce on macOS Version 26.6 (25G70) (but I can't post a reply on the forums because developer.apple.com currently hates me.)

I get the green triangle and `hasDrawable=1 status=0x8cd5 glError=0x0` which is the expected result.

Re:Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:56AM (#50052907)
> for casual users, there are already open source alternatives to Adobe products.

We need a better word than "alternatives" because they are, on the whole, partial-alternatives at best. Whether it's missing features (and I'm not talking about the esoteric here; I'm talking basic things like "expand the selection", etc.) or mind-boggling UX problems, they're all slightly deficient compared with Photoshop.

Which sucks.

Re:Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:53AM (#50052880)
To be fair, I think the kind of person who is going to use the vibecoded clone is your average "I need Photoshop for this one thing"[0] user who isn't working on 100MP images or multi-layer shenanigans or, really, any of the things you'd run into Photoshop's engine efficiencies with.

[0] The purported clones all have deficiencies in one area or another.

Re:Knuth Reward Check on Saturday October 10, 2026 @02:48PM (#50035884)
> I would take it as authoritative unless there is a better source.

I'm not doubting the authority on the balances; it's the correlation to the number of checks I'm querying - high balance doesn't necessarily mean high number of checks, especially since the checks can have different values.

Re:Knuth Reward Check on Saturday October 10, 2026 @01:46PM (#50035296)
Is that necessarily accurate?

> "These account balances reflect only the rewards for errors reported since the beginning of 2006. Many reward checks were issued during 1968--2005, too numerous to mention here."

There's 20 years on that chart vs 37 not on it.

Also that's "account balance" rather than "the most Reward checks" which I take to mean "the most [number of] reward checks" -- there's probably a correlation, yes, but [0] shows a variety of ways where check values are non-constant.

That is lovely. Certainly puts my barebones 2D SVG floor plan to shame. (On the other hand, there's 20+ sensors on there which might be tricky to fit onto something like that image.)
Re:Whistle: Speech to Text in 16.9 MB on Friday October 09, 2026 @06:54AM (#50018736)
Oh yeah, I've seen things like that on YT music videos where it'll just stick random words into the subtitles when there's no actual vocals.

Like on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN__36cjBQ4 (well worth a watch) it'll occasionally stick "Heat." in there.

Re:Whistle: Speech to Text in 16.9 MB on Friday October 09, 2026 @06:52AM (#50018716)
It does more than 30s if you use the `--audio-stream` option. Which is weird.
Re:Testing 12 different Zigbee temperature/humidity sensors on Thursday October 08, 2026 @04:23PM (#50011630)
I can't speak as to what happens with the chemistry but the Zigbee sensors do seem to be fine on standard (not rechargeable) AAA batteries at ~-18ºC.

Rechargeables were worse for me and thus I haven't used them at low temperature for a couple of years - maybe things are better now.

> I’ve seen people say this kind of code was written, but I’ve never seen this kind of code anywhere I have ever worked.

Luckier than me. I've worked at a few places where the code was simultaneously brilliantly written[0] and also unmaintainable nonsense that caused endless problems. One place had its own object model and ORM that absolutely no-one currently at the place understood and literally every bug filed (whilst I was there) could be traced back to that code.

(Probably just a coincidence that most of those places where Perl shops but I've seen it with Go too...)
